of social issues. But oil palm is also a major driver of economic growth and a source of alternative fuel. Since the early 1980s, the total area of land allocated to   10 Sep 2018 Malaysia, the world's second-largest producer of palm oil says it won't allow further expansion of plantations -- but is that really achievable?

The problem with palm oil is not so much that it causes deforestation in tropical countries and threatens exotic animals like the orangutans in Southeast Asia or gorillas in Nigeria with extinction. The problem is not even the frequent stories of land grabs and human rights abuses when it’s grown in large plantations. “The problem is compounded when crude palm oil reaches the refineries where the temperatures are much higher,” he says. The contaminants may have been brought by debris such as sand, stones, mud, wood and leaves that soil the fresh fruit bunches (FFB) during harvesting. The problem with the oil palm industry is the sustainability of arable land. The oil palm industry claimed that oil palm crop is more sustainable than other oil crop in term of oil production per ha. But the industry misuses that crop advantage by not maximising the production per ha. By itself, palm oil is not necessarily a harmful product, but because palm oil is now in thousands of products, the rate at which it's being consumed has caused deforestation and environmental

Another key reason for palm oil’s dominance in the vegetable oils market is its inherent crop productivity compared with the oil seeds. The average oil yield of palm oil is 3.80 tonnes per ha which is 9.3, 7.6 and 5.8 times higher than soybean oil, rapeseed oil and sunflower oil respectively (Oil World 2008).

👎 When it comes down to it, the problems of the palm oil industry are symptoms of a much larger problem that there are countries who get to dictate global economies, and those countries don’t operate on an ethic of environmental or social care, but rather one of domination and exploitation. Palm oil can increase your risk of hypertension not only because of its ability to raise cholesterol levels, but because of one of its other properties. When heated, palm oil releases free radicals that agitate the blood vessels and can lead to arterial thickening—a potential cause of high blood pressure. Most Nutrients Don’t Survive why is it a problem? The industry causes deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, and animal cruelty. Large lots of lands and forests must be cleared to make way for these unsustainable palm oil plantations. They're clearing on average 300 football fields worth of rainforest an hour for palm oil production. Although all palm oil is high in saturated fat, oxidized palm oil presents even greater health risks. The oxidization occurs during processing for culinary use, generating toxins that adversely Oil palms occupy the smallest proportion of all the land that is used for oil and fat production while at the same time accounting for the largest proportion of worldwide oil production – 32 per cent. Sunflowers, coconut and soybeans all have a yield per hectare that is on average just one-third that of palm oil. Oil palm development, therefore, has significant negative impacts on global biodiversity, as it often replaces tropical forests and other species-rich habitats. Globally palm oil production is affecting at least 193 threatened species, according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species TM. It has been estimated that oil palm expansion could affect 54% of all threatened mammals and 64% of all threatened birds globally.

Palm oil benefits your heart too. According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, replacing trans fats with palm oil may reduce heart disease risk markers and improve blood lipids. In a 2015 clinical trial published in the journal Food and Function, both palm oil and olive oil reduced cholesterol levels by 15 percent.
