The International Ice Patrol is an organization with the purpose of monitoring the presence of icebergs in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and reporting their movements for safety purposes. It is operated by United States Coast Guard but is funded by the 13 nations interested in trans-Atlantic navigation. As of 2011 the governments contributing to the International Ice Patrol include Belgium An International Ice Patrol picture. Icebergs are just as much a threat to the shipping industry today as they were in 1912. Ship Masters are weary of even the seemingly smallest pieces of ice near their vessel. As a result of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, U.S. Coast Guard ice patrols were begun to chart the location of icebergs. IIP# Is a number used to identify the iceberg sighting of that year. It follows the International Ice Patrol format and the database compiler assigns it on years where the IIP had no records. The integer part of the number indicates the number of sighting. The greatest number of icebergs (2202) occurred in 1984, while twice in IIP’s history (1966 and 2006) no icebergs were estimated to have passed south of 48° N. Five times in IIP’s history there has been at least one iceberg estimated to have passed south of 48° N during each of the months of the ice year: 1915, 1919 through 1921, and 1985. icebergs. Wonder if this "thick mist" was a local event or an effect created by the ice field, and was this seen by Titanic's lookouts? Surprised this occurred 4 days before the Titanic sank and yet no warning was given or attempt was made to survey the area and report to all traffic the precise location of the ice.
